Somersham & Sproughton Primary Schools
6 May 2005 The New Scorpion Band from Dorset made its first visit to Suffolk on Friday 6th May. During the day they visited the primary schools in Somersham and Sproughton. Teachers and pupils were delighted with the shows that the band put on. They put on two 1-hour shows in both schools so that all the pupils had the chance to see the band. The five members of the band play about fifty instruments between them and about twenty five different instruments were seen at the school shows as they played and sang traditional songs and tunes from the British Isles. The children also enjoyed watching a puppet dancing on his head. Jan Hubbard, the Headteacher at Somersham Primary School, said, "We were delighted to host the band for the morning. The children at Somersham Primary School waited in eager anticipation for the arrival of the band and the school was soon a 'buzz' of excitement. School Governors had been invited to attend the morning concerts and they were as impressed as the staff. It was good to hear such a range of old classics and more up to date renditions. I will let the children tell you what they thought." Anna wrote, "Last Friday the Scorpion Band came to our school. The music was great and Tim, Sharon, Bob, Brian and Robin were excellent! Alice says 'They were very entertaining.' Toni says 'It was brilliant!' and the rest of the school think so too. We were all singing and clapping and it put us in a jolly mood. We suggest youwatch them as they are very entertaining". Morgan (Class 2, Year 3) said, "Last week the New Scorpion Band came into school and played some lovely music and everybody thought 10/10. There were loads of different instruments and the most funny piece is when Tim gets out his friend Jack who is made with wood and Tim bangs him upside down! Everybody laughed and clapped!". "Last Friday the New Scorpion Band performed at Somersham. It was brilliant". Anna, a girl in year 4 says "It was very entertaining and very good music. Bob, Brian, Sharon, Robin and Timperformed perfectlyand their music was brilliant". Ms Hubbard, our Headteacher, said "They were brilliant and I was lucky enough to see them again in Sproughton." Ms Hubbard even bought the CD and they were our composers of the week! You really should see them because they are brilliant". Melissa and Toni, two girls inyear 4: "It was absolutely fantastic and it was brilliant". "I am sure everyone else at Somersham School thinks that too." by Alice.
From Sproughton Primary School, AbbieFuller said, "I thought that the
musicians were really good. The music was magical and smooth. There was
a funny bit when a man called Jack did a funny dance to the music."
Ellie Earey wrote, "I sat with my friends in Class 4 to listen to a
band that came to visit our school. They were called the New Scorpion
Band and they sang songs about people that lived a long time ago. All
the songs were like stories. I liked all the instruments but best of
all I liked the violin."
We'd like to thank Suffolk Folk for sponsoring the educational work so that the schools could afford to give their pupils this wonderful experience. Mike & Jenny Everett |
